ME

Kenyan, studied in Malaysia, currently living in Abu dabhi . My undergraduate studies in Architecture have equipped me with creativity, conceptual design skills, planning skills, skills necessary for effective construction in the continuously changing environment . I am now seeking to expand my knowledge and skills, I am a motivated multi cultured individual who is ready to open up to opportunities in the Architectural design world . I hope that together we can make a difference socially, economically and environmentally.

Building Construction 2

This is the second part of my building construction learning, this part aims to introduce structures as architecture by developing an understanding of the structural systems in construction technology. to achieve a full understanding of the structural systems in construction, we went through a series of projects and lectures.
below are all the projects i did through this module.
Project 1:
Understanding forces in skeletal structures.
This is a group assignment of 6 members, we were to construct a model of a tower, with a specific material like popsicle sticks, not any sort of glue, for joining sticks we can use threads and pins. the height of the tower is maximum 30cm. the tower should support minimum 1.2 kg.

we first planned the design of our tower using sketchup.
Materials we used:

popsicle sticks

thread for joining.

Pins
our tower model.

after a complete completion of this project, I am now able to apply construction systems in design, and also gave me the instinct to analyse the issues of strength, stiffness and stability of structures includes modes of structural systems, forces, stress and strain and laws of static.

Project 2:
Understanding Forces in Solid Structure and Surface Structure
The objectives of this project are as follows:
  • To create an understanding of solid structure and surface structure and its relevant structural components.
  • To understand how a solid structure and surface structure reacts under loading.
  • To demonstrate a convincing understanding of how Solid Construction and surface construction works.
  • To exploit the qualities inherent in Solid Construction and surface construction.
  • To be able to manipulate Solid Construction and surface construction to solve an oblique Design
    problem.
This was a group project of 7 members however our group had 4 members, thus making us work extra hours, however that was not a problem but taught us a lot.
we had to
Produce a model showing the different structural systems used in the building building we proposed to study. Suitable scale and material to be used for the construction of the model shall depend entirely upto us.
our group chose the putrajaya waterfront apartments.
in the process of research of this building, we managed to visit the architectural firm responsible in designing these apartments which are yet to be built.

After a successful completion of the assignment I learnt to:
  • Identifications of basic structural systems in construction
  • Compare solid and surface construction systems.
  • Differentiate solid and surface construction systems in terms of loads and forces acting on structural
    elements.
  • Recognize and apply the implications of construction system in design.
  • Analyse the issues of strength, stiffness and stability of structures including modes of structural
systems, forces, stress and strain and laws of static.
