ARCHITECTURE STUDIO 6 (ADP)

INTRODUCTION
This architecture design project is a documentation of design progress for a specific building that contains architectural solutions for social issues , site issues and environmental issues around the chosen site and its context.
We will first discuss and focus on the site conditions and analysis of the information obtained during site visit , we will go on to discuss the study of the user and target groups and their requirements and needs.
Analysis and studies of earlier developments and precedent studies are also included to ensure that the building program and form are headed in the direction. The social impact of the chosen program is  studied to ensure the success of the building.
Sustainability of the design has also been studied and included into the project to reduce costs and to ensure sustainability standards are met.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
To develop a design based on the given site to suggest improvements and proper architectural solutions for the site issues.
The BABA NYONYA CULINARY CENTER aims to be an acupuncture of Melaka town, to be the center point that bridges various people of different lifestyle is to help and educate each other as well as to revive the baba nyonya food culture in Melaka as a heritage.
The culinary center is strictly centered to provide facilities, experience and education while it still allows for informal performances around the center to lure people into the vicinity.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
To develop a design strategy (to the level of sketch design phase) for your proposed project, and produce a formal architectural design strategy that response to the proposed brief.

PROGRAMMATIC RESPONSE

As and attempt to acknowledge the site’s suitability, demographic and potential as well as social strengths and opportunities that can be harnessed on, the facility is separated into three blocks, where the first mainly focuses on the social academic program, the second focuses on the learning and innovation program, and the third an interactive residential block.

INTRODUCTION TO SITE.
The project Is located, in the malaysian state on the malay peninsula’s southwest coast capital which is the MELAKA city, most precisely at the JALAN BANDAHARA, which is located at the entrance of the city. Melaka city has a colonial past seen in it’s preserved town center. It Is known as the historical state, holding a unique culture, you can call it multi cultured. As it was colonized by more then one countries. The whole character of the city changes when you step onto the street during the day, there is not much activity, however when the sun goes down, the street will be hustling and bustling with activities especially social activities.
At this moment the site is a car park space, at the end corner of the street. It is surrounded by building designed at the art decor and modern format. A number of tall building have been constructed around it, mainly hotels. It is also in a close proximity of a number of famous landmarks.
The people active on the street are mostly senior locals, tourists from the next door hotels, and a small community of youth. A potential opportunity to induce the program of a culinary center Is highly present as the surrounding perimeter comprises of a number of street stalls, café and restaurants however lacking with culture.
Thus the opportunity carries along the induction of a new kind of social culinary center, which benefits the surrounding. It will drive the community towards oneness and allow for social interaction between residents and visitors, of different age groups.

SITE ISSUES:
Jalan bandahara in Melaka is a gate way to Melaka city, meaning it is located at the entrance of Melaka, it can act as a highlight for most tourists before reaching the heritage site, however Jalan Bandahara has a lack of activities, and the locals are senior citizens, with no attraction around the site.

DESIGN SUITABILTY
The design has taken great consideration towards the climate and pedestrian flow from and within the site. Every space of the building has been divided and arranged according to climate, function, privacy levels and hierarchy. The spaces reflect the concept and program in an organized way.
The site Is located at the end of the street, thus making it very versatile, in the sense that it reflects the head of the street. The wideness of the site, allows various play of façade and for a more rhythmic approach.
To help divide the site well, there is an introduction of landscaping as a feature, and a street walk as part of public interaction space. The circulation stretches as the outer board of the entire building as this allows pedestrians to be drawn in from each angle. The main building stands as a strong geometric core that wraps around the site with a courtyard in the middle, that is used as a social space where activity and program related activities take place.
The use of such a geometric design Is to allow for people to be exposed to the street scape while being within the building. There is a long concourse across the building that creates interaction between the inside and outside of the building.
Other site improvements include parking spaces which are designed for ease of circulation to avoid traffic congestion. The views of the building have also been considered and the building integrates all opportunities.
KEY FEATURE
The main feature of this building would be its transparency and light and shadow interplay. The structure is almost natural with with the timber slits, and weightless and seems effortless.
The architecture tends to connect visually with the people and the streetscape below. In comparison to all the surrounding buildings, the culinary center is a unique design and form, compared to the surrounding buildings, therefor it immediately catches one’s eye.
PROGRAM RELATIONSHIP
By relation to the program, the architecture is composed of 3 components, accommodation which takes one block, institutional which take the middle block, and commercial which take the left block.

The Accommodation block allows for the stay of the stuff, the institutional part allows for educational purposes. The building tends to weave along the spaces that are present for social meetings.
